Merck has introduced a new portfolio of bio-based solvents for High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) designed to support sustainable laboratory operations without affecting analytical performance. The new solvents are manufactured using renewable feedstocks and are developed as direct replacements for conventional fossil-fuel-based HPLC solvents.

Supporting Greener Chromatography

The portfolio includes bio-based alternatives for commonly used solvents such as acetonitrile, methanol and ethanol. According to Merck, the new solvents deliver an average 25.9% lower CO₂ equivalent emissions while maintaining the precision, reproducibility and reliability required for demanding HPLC and LC-MS workflows.

Designed for Easy Laboratory Adoption

Merck developed the solvents as “drop-in replacements,” allowing laboratories to transition without redeveloping existing analytical methods. The portfolio is compatible with established HPLC and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry systems, helping laboratories simplify sustainability adoption in regulated environments.

The company also introduced specific product grades including Acetonitrile BioRenewable (Prod. No. 104771), Methanol BioRenewable (Prod. No. 106188 and 106176) and Ethanol BioRenewable (Prod. No. 117480) for chromatography applications.
