
Waters Corporation has launched the Waters TA Instruments™ Coin Cell Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), a new analytical system designed to improve battery safety research. The system allows researchers to analyze fully assembled coin cells while simultaneously measuring heat flow, evolved gases and electrochemical behavior in a single experiment.
Integrated Battery Analysis
The Coin Cell DSC combines thermal analysis with voltage monitoring and charge/discharge capabilities. Researchers can correlate thermal and electrochemical behavior from the same battery sample, helping identify potential signs of thermal runaway and battery failure at an earlier stage.
Reduces Sample Preparation Time
A specialized whole-cell capsule design eliminates the need to dismantle coin cells before testing. According to Waters, this can reduce average sample preparation time by more than 90% while preserving the integrity of the battery sample.
Wide Temperature Range
The system operates across a temperature range of -80°C to 600°C, enabling researchers to study battery behavior under both low- and high-temperature conditions. The system can also be connected to mass spectrometry (MS), FTIR or GC-MS for analysis of gases released from the cell.
