• General description: Pharmaceutical secondary standards for application in quality control, provide pharma laboratories and manufacturers with a convenient and cost-effective alternative to the preparation of in-house working standards.
• Application: Ampicillin Sodium may be used as a pharmaceutical secondary reference standard for the determination of the analyte in pharmaceutical formulations[1] by high performance liquid chromatography with ultra violet detection and second-derivative spectrophotometry, respectively.
• Biochem/physiol Actions: Mode of Action: This is a ß-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis by inactivating transpeptidases on the inner surface of the bacterial cell membrane. Mode of Resistance: Administration with ß-lactamase cleaves the ß-lactam ring of Ampicillin and inactivates it. Antimicrobial Spectrum: Includes both gram-positive (similar to benzylpenicillin) and gram-negative bacteria (similar to tetracyclines and chloramphenicol.
