Description
- General description: Ellagic acid is a naturally occurring phenolic acid in many fruits and vegetables, as a secondary plant metabolite.[1] It is commonly found in green tea, pomegranate, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and walnuts.[2]
- Application: Ellagic acid has been used:to study the metabolism of dietary phenolic acids by Lactobacillus plantarum CECT 748T[1]as a potential substrate for the high production of Lactobacillus plantarum tannase[3]as a standard in the study to examine the phenolic components and anti-oxidant activity of nettle[4]to study the links between dietary ellagic acid and epigenetic modulation of adipogenesis[5]
- Biochem/physiol Actions: Ellagic acid has been found to exhibit antioxidant activity by virtue of having an inhibitory effect on the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins. This makes them have a cardioprotective effect on humans.[6] In addition, it shows anticarcinogenic, antifibrotic, antiplasmodial, apoptotic, and chemopreventive activities as well.[2]
