- Fisherbrand SickleScreen products use a modified Nalbandian procedure that provides fast and accurate results for screening and detecting hereditary sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait
- When sickle cell patients are in crisis, their Hb S becomes sickle or cresent shaped and can no longer carry oxygen
- The abnormal cells often break apart and can cause damage to the spleen, kidneys, bone, eyes, lungs and central nervous system
- The procedure is based on the differential solubility of Hemoglobin S (Hb S) and Hemoglobin A (Hb A) in concentrated phosphate solution
- The 120-test kit contains phosphate buffer (4 x 125mL) and four sodium hydrosulfite vials
- The 30-test kit contains a bottle of phosphate buffer (125mL) with a dispensing cap and 30 pre-filled reaction vials Positive and negative controls are for Hb A and Hb S
