• Confirm Gram-stain reaction of anaerobes and presumptively identify anaerobic, Gram-negative bacilli with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Vancomycin Disks
• Proposed in 1971 by Sutter and Finegold 1 who recommended a method to identify anaerobic, Gram-negative bacilli based on the difference in response to an antibiotic
• Accordingly, organisms can be grouped based on their characteristic inhibitory patterns with erythromycin, rifampin, colistin, penicillin, kanamycin and vancomycin 2,3

• Penicillin, rifampin and kanamycin separate Bacteroides and Fusobacterium .
