Description
- In a head-on accident, both drivers claimed that the other driver fell asleep at the wheel and caused a fatal accident which was later ruled a homicide
- The attending physician at the local hospital did a thorough examination of the two drivers, took blood and urine samples and measured the drivers' temperatures using a disposable plastic mouthpiece and a tongue depressor, which he saved
- Fortunately, the physician had read that the level of saliva amylase increases in humans who are sleep deprived
- In this exercise, students will: Analyze the level of saliva amylase found on the tongue depressors of the two drivers Use the results to determine who fell asleep at the wheel, causing the accident This experiment does not contain components that have been prepared from human sources.
