Description

  • Presumptively detect, isolate and enumerate pathogenic staphylococci in milk, food, fish and other specimens with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Mannitol Salt Agar (Dehydrated)
  • Due to high concentrations of salt in the medium, most unwanted bacteria are inhibited with the exception of some halophilic marine organisms
  • Presumptive coagulase-positive staphylococci produce colonies surrounded by bright yellow zones while non-pathogenic staphylococci produce colonies with reddish purple zones
  • Staphylococcus aureus is a coagulase-positive, catalase-positive, Gram-positive cocci that occur singly or in pairs, tetrads, short chains, and grape-like clusters
  • S
  • aureus can produce a variety of syndromes with clinical manifestations, including skin and soft tissue infections, empyema, bloodstream infections, pneumonia, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, endocarditis, sepsis, and meningitis
  • Clearly and easily differentiate Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis while most other bacteria is inhibited by the high salt concentration
  • Highly selective: due to high concentrations of salt in the medium
  • Easy to differentiate: Staphylococcus aureus forms yellow colonies with yellow halo while Staphylococcus epidermis forms pink colonies with medium turning pink
