• Selectively isolate and differentiate Burkholderia cepacia complex from respiratory secretions of patients with cystic fibrosis with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Burkholderia Cepacia Selective Agar prepared plates
• Selective agents crystal violet, polymixin B, gentamicin, and vancomycin inhibit organisms commonly found in respiratory secretions other than B

• Sucrose and lactose are carbohydrates for enrichment and differentiation with phenol red as a pH indicator

• cepacia appear as yellow colonies on the medium
• Since the mid 1980’s, B.cepacia complex has been recognized as an important pathogen affecting patients with cystic fibrosis
• Colonization and pulmonary infection with this organism have been associated with a rapid decline in pulmonary function and poor patient prognosis.
