Cultivate aerobes and anaerobes using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Thioglycollate Medium w/Dextrose, Hemin, Vitamin K
This general-purpose medium was first described by Brewer in 1940 1 , and consists of a small amount of agar and a reducing substance to initiate the growth of anaerobes
Thioglycollate Medium w/Dextrose is a liquid medium recommended for use as a general purpose media
Sodium thioglycollate is the reducing agent which removes molecular oxygen from the medium and prevents the accumulation of peroxides which may be lethal to some organisms
Dextrose is added to the medium to study specific fermentation reactions
Hemin is added as a source of X factor which stimulates the growth of many fastidious organisms and Vitamin K promotes growth of some Bacteroides species and gram-positive sporeformers
This medium contains casein peptone and cystine that provide nitrogen and carbon essential for growth of aerobes and anaerobes
Dextrose is the source of fermentable carbohydrate
A small amount of agar is added to impede oxygen diffusion
Hemin stimulates the growth of fastidious organisms and Vitamin K promotes growth of some Bacteroides spp
and gram-positive sporeformers
Sodium thioglycolate is the reducing agent
Sulfahydryl groups inactivate mercury and other heavy metals and neutralize the antibacterial effect of some preservatives
