Description

  • General description: Chlorophyll b is one of the chlorophyll pigments that impart leaves their green color. Chlorophyll is a Greek name with chlorós meaning green and phyllon meaning leaf. The structure of Chlorophyll b was successfully decoded by Fischer and Wenderoth. It is present in peripheral antenna complexes along with chlorophyll a. The amount of chlorophyll b in spinach is found to be lesser than chlorophyll a.[1][2][3]
  • Application: Chlorophyll b from spinach has been used:to perform quantitative analysis of the components of carotenoid and chlorophyll in the monovarietal virgin olive oil samples[4]to study the function of chlorophyll and porphyrins in the photo-oxidation of dairy products using sensory evaluation and fluorescence spectroscopy[5]to analyze the limits of application of spectrophotometry and spectrofluorimetry in the determination of Chlorophyll a/b ratio[6]to examine the changes in chlorophyll -a & -b content and color of grapevine leaves[7]
  • Biochem/physiol Actions: Chlorophyll b undergoes breakdown to form pheophytin b by the enzyme chlorophyllase. This causes a change in its color from green to olive-brown.[2] It is involved in the harvesting of light energy during the process of photosynthesis and its subsequent conversion to chemical energy. Along with chlorophyll a, it plays a key role in the ability of a plant to adapt to different light intensities.[3]
