Description

• General description: Insulin is a two-chain peptide hormone consisting of 51 amino acids, and its structure corresponds to native insulin produced in vivo by the beta cells of the pancreas. The A-chain is composed of 21 amino acids, and the B-chain is composed of 30 amino acids.[1] Insulin (Pork) USP reference standard is provided as delivered and specified by the issuing Pharmacopoeia. • Biochem/physiol Actions: Two-chain polypeptide hormone produced by the β-cells of pancreatic islets. Its molecular weight is ~5800 Da. The α and β chains are joined by two interchain disulfide bonds. The α chain contains an intrachain disulfide bond. Insulin regulates the cellular uptake, utilization, and storage of glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids and inhibits the breakdown of glycogen, protein, and fat.
