- The reaction of NO with superoxide which is often present under conditions of oxidative stress, forms peroxynitrite, a strong oxidant which can nitrosate tyrosine residues on proteins
- Nitrotyrosine has been shown to be present in proteins from artherosclerotic lesions of human carotid arteries and also in placenta during pre-eclampsia.
