Description

  • HDAC-9 is a histone deacetylase with an important role in the regulation of gene expression and hematopoiesis
  • A nuclear protein, HDAC-9 belongs to the histone deacetylase family with several isoforms and is inhibited by Trichostatin A (TSA) and suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid
  • It helps in deacetylation of lysine residues on the N-terminal part of the core histones (H2A, H2B, H3 and H4) and gives a tag for epigenetic repression and plays an important role in transcriptional regulation, cell cycle progression and developmental events
  • MEF2-dependent transcription is repressed by HDAC-9 by recruiting HDAC-1 and/or HDAC-3
  • It also inhibits skeletal myogenesis and is involved in heart development
  • Ubiquitous but variable expression is seen in brain and other tissues like heart, pancreas and also in human bladder carcinoma cells
  • Lack of HDAC-9 protein is found in a family with Peters anomaly, a central corneal leukoma.
