  • SOX1, also known as SRY (sex determining region Y)-box 1, is a transcription factor belonging to the SRY-related HMG box family of transcription factors with a HMG box DNA-binding domain
  • SOX1 works through multiple independent pathways to promote neuronal cell fate determination and differentiation
  • This nuclear protein acts as a modulator of LINE retroposons promoter activity and is also involved in the development of the central nervous system, mainly neural and lens development
  • Transcriptional activator SOX1 binds directly to the HES1 promoter and suppresses HES1 transcription, thus attenuating Notch signaling
  • It also binds to beta-catenin and suppresses beta-catenin-mediated TCF/LEF signaling, thus potentially attenuating the WNT signaling pathway
  • Expression of SOX1 is seen mostly in embryonic tissues and moderately in brain.
