GPIIb is a single-pass type I membrane protein of the integrin alpha chain family
It serves as a receptor of fibronectin, fibrinogen, plasminogen, prothrombin, thrombospondin and vitronectin
It recognizes the sequence R-G-D in a wide array of ligands
Following activation it brings about platelet/platelet interaction through binding of soluble fibrinogen
This step leads to rapid platelet aggregation, which physically plugs ruptured endothelial cell surface
GPIIb is synthesized with a signal peptide of 31 amino acids that is cleaved to produce the mature form that has an extracellular domain (aa 32-993), a helical domain (aa 994-1019), and a cytoplasmic tail (aa 1020-1039)
