- Transcription factor HES-2, of the HES family of proteins, contains one basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) domain and one orange domain
- It is reported to express in vascular smooth muscle cells, and may have some role in their differentiation
- Activation of Notch signaling pathway leads to activation of Hes family genes through the interaction between Notch intracellular domain and RBPSUH (CSL)
- Hes family proteins are mammalian homologs of Drosophila Hairy and Enhancer of split
- The Hes family of transcriptional repressors are implicated in the cell fate determination of stem cells (or precursor cells) by suppressing the expression of tissue-specific transcriptional activators.
