- The terminal reaction is carried out by the C-terminal enzyme OMP decarboxylase which converts orotidine-5' -monophosphate to uridine monophosphate
- Defects in this gene are the cause of hereditary orotic aciduria
- Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
