- Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 4 (TIMP4) is encoded by the gene TIMP4 located on chromosome 3
- It belongs to the family of TIMP genes and is known to inhibit the activity of matrix metalloproteinases
- Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) are a group of proteinases that degrade the components of extracellular matrix
- TIMP4 irreversibly binds to MMPs and inactivates them with the help of zinc as a cofactor
- The netrin domain of TIMP4 is involved in platelet recruitment and aggregation
- Other biological functions include response to cytokine and peptide hormone stimuli and involvement with the ovulation cycle and CNS development.
