- This nuclear protein acts as a modulator of LINE retroposons promoter activity and is also involved in the development of the central nervous system, mainly neural and lens development
- Transcriptional activator SOX1 binds directly to the HES1 promoter and suppresses HES1 transcription, thus attenuating Notch signaling
- It also binds to beta-catenin and suppresses beta-catenin-mediated TCF/LEF signaling, thus potentially attenuating the WNT signaling pathway
- Expression of SOX1 is seen mostly in embryonic tissues and moderately in brain.
