Description

  • General description: (+)-Sodium L-ascorbate (SA) is a potential antioxidant and is a derivative of vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid).[1][2] It is widely used as a food additive.[1] In addition, SA enhances growth retardation activity of bleomycin sulfate, R020-1724 (an inhibitor of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase), prostaglandin E1 and sodium butyrate agents on neuroblastoma cells in culture.[3] Elevated levels of SA induces two-stage urinary bladder carcinogenesis in rats.[1] sodium L-ascorbate in combination with collagenogenesis inhibitors is used to treat dermal scars and keloids.[2]
  • Application: (+)-Sodium L-ascorbate has been used:to produce H2O2 in cell culture media[4][5]as a reducing agent for a cell-permeable artificial electron donor, N,N,N′,N′-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine (TMPD)[6]to study its effect on production of collagen and elastic fibers in fibroblasts cultures derived from normal human skin and dermal fat[2]
  • Biochem/physiol Actions: Antioxidant
