  • Application: Sodium acetate is suitable for use as a buffer in:protein crystallization[1] staining of gels in protein gel, electrophoresis, neutralization buffer for chromatography[2]the preparation of standard (acetylcholine chloride) for hestrin assay[3]substrate screening characterization for microfluidic microbial fuel cell array[4]
  • Biochem/physiol Actions: Sodium acetate anhydrous is commonly used in molecular biology applications. This serves as a buffering agent in the DNA digestion experiments by ensuring the reaction has optimum pH.[5] In general sodium acetate is preferred in purification, precipitation, crystallization, and other applications which require tight control of elemental content. Sodium acetate is extensively used as a retardant in plastics manufacturing, as a mordant in dyeing, and in the tanning of leather.
  • Other Notes: Extraction buffer component in the large-scale phenol extraction of RNA (for mRNA isolation)[6].
