- General description: Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a polyether compound[1] with repeated ethylene glycol units[-(CH2CH2O)n].[2]
- Application: Poly(ethylene glycol) has been used as a liquid medium to prepare shear thickening fluid (STF) by directly mixing it with fumica silica.[3][4][5]
- Biochem/physiol Actions: Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a synthetic polymer[6] and is used as an additive in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.[1] It is also involved in biomedical applications like biosensing, imaging, and tissue engineering. PEG is used as a gold standard in bioconjugation and nanomedicine thereby increasing blood circulation time and improving drug efficacy. PEG-conjugated drugs are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They are considered safe for use in humans.[6] PEG reduces the liver uptake and repels protein adsorption, which makes it useful in nanocoating.[7]
