Description
- General description: Phosphatidylglycerol (PG) is one of the major phospholipids in food and biological tissues.[1] PG is the anionic phospholipid in the membranes of Staphylococcus sp.[2] and Escherichia coli.[3] PG is present in low amounts in mammalian membranes.[4] Structurally, PG has two acyl chains esterified to a glycerol, bonded to a headgroup structure that has phosphate and carries negative charge.[5] PG is synthesized from cytidine phosphate-diacylglycerol (CDP-DAG).[6]
- Application: Egg PG has been used:as a phospholipid to test the binding ability of SEIPIN, an integral membrane protein of endoplasmic recticulum[7]as a standard for photodynamic treatment[2]as a standard for the identification of phospholipids by thin layer chromatography and electrospray ionization-mass spectra (ESI-MS)[2][3]
- Biochem/physiol Actions: Phosphatidylglycerol (PG) is present in amniotic fluid and indicates fetal lung maturity.[8] It functions as a precursor for cardiolipin in animals.[4] In plants, PG is present in thylakoid membranes and plays a central role in photosynthesis.[6]
