  • General description: 4ME 16:0 Coenzyme A, also known as phytanoyl coenzyme A, is a coenzyme A derivative of phytanic acid. Phytanoyl coenzyme A is a metabolic intermediate of phytol degradation pathway.[1] It is converted to 2-hydroxyphytanoyl-CoA by the enzyme phytanoyl-CoA 2-hydroxylase (PAHX).[2] Accumulation of phytanic acid due to the deficiency of PAHX causes Refsum′s disease.[3]
