Thermo Scientific™ Giolitti-Cantoni Broth (Dehydrated)

Description

• Selectively enrich Staphylococcus aureus from food and feedstuffs when following ISO 6888-3:2003 with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Giolitti-Cantoni Broth (Dehydrated) when used with sterile solution of Potassium tellurite (SR0030)
• Mannitol and sodium pyruvate in the medium act as growth stimulants for staphylococci and aid detection of the organisms when present in small numbers 1
• The growth of Gram-negative lactose-fermenting bacilli is inhibited by lithium chloride and Gram-positive bacilli are inhibited by potassium tellurite in combination with glycine
• Giolitti-Cantoni Broth is an anaerobic enrichment broth for Staphylococcus aureus in food samples
• Selective: lithium chloride inhibits Gram-negative bacilli, while potassium tellurite, in combination with glycine, inhibits Gram-positive organisms other than staphylococci
• Easy-to-read : the presence of coagulase-positive staphylococci is indicated by the reduction of tellurite, resulting in a blackening of the broth or a black precipitate
• Giolitti-Cantoni Broth is recommended for the detection of Staphylococcus aureus in dried baby milk and other weaning foods where the organism should be absent from 1g of test material 2
• The medium is suitable for the examination of meat and meat products 3
• For this purpose, the concentration of the potassium tellurite must be reduced to 0.35% and it is recommended that the weight of the test sample should be reduced to 0.1-0.01g
