Thermo Scientific™ Salmonella Shigella Agar (Dehydrated)

Description

• Perform selective and differential isolation of Salmonella and partly Shigella spp
• from clinical specimens, including feces, and food samples 1 using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Salmonella Shigella Agar (Dehydrated)
• Leifson modified the Deoxycholate-Citrate Agar used for the detection of enteric pathogens 2 and added bile salts mixture to inhibit the growth of gram-positive organisms
• Salmonella and Shigella are major causes of bacterial enteric illness with transmission occurring via the fecal-oral route, person-to-person contact, or by the ingestion of contaminated food or water
• Perform selective and differential isolation of Salmonella and partly Shigella spp
• from clinical specimens, including feces, and food samples using Salmonella Shigella Agar
• Ease of Differentiation: Based on the fermentation of lactose; gram-negative bacilli produce pink to red colonies whereas lactose non-fermenters produce transparent to colorless colonies
• Selective: Due to the inclusion of selective inhibitory substances brilliant green, bile salts, thiosulphate, and citrate, most gram-positive and coliform organisms are inhibited
• This medium is used for qualitative procedures
• This medium contains bile salts, brilliant green and citrates which acts as selective agents and inhibit gram-positive bacteria and coliforms
• Sodium thiosulfate, a sulfur source, and ferric ammonium citrate work as indicators to enable organisms which produce H 2 S to form black-centered colonies, including some strains of Salmonella
• Lactose acts as a differentiator
