• General description: WWTR1 (WW domain containing transcription regulator 1) is also known as TAZ (transcriptional co-activator with PDZ-binding motif). It is a transcriptional coactivator with a N-terminal TEAD-binding motif and without a DNA-binding motif. TAZ is a 14-3-3 binding protein that is expressed at high level in thyroid, kidney, heart, placenta and lung. It is present in cytoplasm and nucleus. The WWTR1 gene is located on human chromosome 3q25.1.

TAZ participates in mesenchymal stem cell differentiation. It plays a vital role in mechanotransduction. Overexpression of TAZ leads to increased cell proliferation, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), cell migration and transformation.
