• General description: Heat shock protein family B (small) member (HSPB1) is a member of the small heat shock proteins (HSPs) family. It is ubiquitously expressed and is highly produced in heart and skeletal muscles. HSPB1 is located in the cytosol and nucleus. This protein is recognized as a component of the nuclear speckles. HSPB1 gene is located on the human chromosome 7q11.23.

• Biochem/physiol Actions: Heat shock protein family B (small) member (HSPB1) serves as an ATP-independent molecular chaperone. It can block the irreversible aggregation of bound substrates in vitro. HSPB1 plays a key role in the remodeling of cytoskeleton during embryogenesis. HSPB1 gene mutations lead to distal hereditary motor neuropathy type II (dHMN II) or Charcot-Marie-tooth disease type 2F (CMT2F). It is involved in metastasis formation. Due to its cytoprotective properties, HSPB1 plays a role in oncogenesis and resistance to anti-cancer therapy.
