• Biochem/physiol Actions: Pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPPA) is an insulin-like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP) protease. It is characterized as a zinc-binding matrix metalloproteinase that is abundantly expressed in eroded and ruptured plaques. It may function as a marker of plaque destabilization. In presence of IGF, PAPP-A particularly cleaves IGF-binding protein (IGFBP)-4, one of six antagonists of IGF action, which leads to the release of IGF bound to IGFBP-4.
