• General description: Carbonic anhydrase 14 (CA14) is a metalloenzyme, which is localized in the brain. It belongs to the α-CA gene family and the gene encoding it is present on the chromosome 1q21. It has a hydrophobic N-terminal signal sequence and a transmembrane domain at the C-terminal.

• Biochem/physiol Actions: Carbonic anhydrase 14 (CA14) catalyzes the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. It is also involved in modulating the response to excitatory stimuli at synaptic termini. CA14 regulates intracellular pH in hippocampal neurons by regulating AE3-mediated Cl-–HCO3- exchange.
