• Biochem/physiol Actions: ACSL1 (Acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 1) is highly expressed in the energy- metabolizing tissues such as adipose, liver, and muscle. It is majorly involved in the fatty acid metabolism and triacylglycerol (TAG) synthesis. In addition, it also functions in the lipid metabolism, insulin resistance, and obesity. It plays different roles in different tissues. In adipose tissue, it functions with the peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR)-γ, whereas in the liver, ACSL1 behaves as a target of PPAR-α. Mutation in ACSL1 alters the fatty acid metabolism termed as a metabolic syndrome (MetS), which is characterized with insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, abdominal obesity, and hypertension. It indirectly enhances the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular diseases, and atherosclerosis.
