• Biochem/physiol Actions: CES1 (Carboxylesterase 1) is novel member of the carboxylesterase family. It is mainly involved in the cocaine metabolism. It is expressed in liver. It facilitates several reactions i.e. transesterification of methyl ester group of cocaine to benzoylecgonin and benzoic acid, 4-methylumbelliferyl acetate to 4-methylumbelliferone, heroin to 6-monoacetylmorphine, and 6-monoacetylmorphine to morphine. It also catalyzes the conversion of oleic acid to ethyloleate in the presence of ethanol.
