• General description: The gene METAP2 (methionine aminopeptidase 2) is mapped to human chromosome 12q22. The protein localizes in the cytoplasm.

• Biochem/physiol Actions: Methionine aminopeptidases (METAPs) are responsible for removal of methionine from newly generated polypeptides. Glycosylated METAP2 protects eIF2α (eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 subunit α) from EIF2AK (eIF2 kinase)-mediated phosphorylation, thereby promoting protein synthesis. It has been shown to play crucial role in tumorigenesis. METAP2 is a target of the fungal metabolite fumagillin.
