• General description: The gene HSD17B14 (17-β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 14) is mapped to human chromosome 19q13.33. It belongs to 17β hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases (17βHSDs) family of proteins. HSD17B14 is strongly expressed in the brain, liver and placenta. The protein localizes in the cytoplasm.

• Biochem/physiol Actions: 17β hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases (17βHSDs) are mainly involved in oxidation/reduction at position C17 of sex steroids. HSD17B14 oxidizes estradiol and testosterone into less bioactive steroid metabolites. Humans with high levels of HSD17B14 have lower local recurrences of estrogen positive breast cancer when treated with tamoxifen.
