Description
- General description: β2-microglobulin (B2M) is a non-glycosylated polypeptide composed of 99 amino acids. It is present on the surface of all nucleated cells.[1] The protein is characterized with a single polypeptide chain, which is linked noncovalently to major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I cell surface antigen.[2] The gene coding for B2M is mapped to human chromosome 15q.[3]

- Biochem/physiol Actions: β2-microglobulin (B2M) plays a vital role in cell survival, proliferation and metastasis in various types of cancer. Elevated concentration of β-2-microglobulin (B2M) can be considered as a prognostic marker for hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH).[2] Elevated concentration of circulating B2M, due to renal dysfunction and long term hemodialysis, leads to dialysis-related amyloidosis.[4] Overexpression of serum B2M is observed in hepatitis C virus (HCV) related chronic liver diseases, therefore it might act as a potential marker for the HCV disease progression towards cirrhosis and carcinoma.[1] Missense mutation in the B2M gene results in familial hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia (FHH).[5]
