Description
- General description: Glial cell derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 5p14.1−q13.3.[1] It belongs to the transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) superfamily.[2] GDNF is abundantly found in gliomas.[2]

- Biochem/physiol Actions: Glial cell derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is a neurotrophic factor involved in dopaminergic and neurodevelopment.[1] It plays a vital role in self-renewal of stem cells. In addition, GDNF also facilitates differentiation of chained undifferentiated spermatogonia.[3] GDNF with its receptors, activates various signaling pathways essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis.[2] Mutated gene is associated with the development of schizophrenia.[1] GDNF is a potential target for treating Parkinson′s disease.[2]
