- The inactive polypeptide formed upon translation undergoes cleavage to produce a 69 kDa alpha-chain and 34 kDa beta-chain

- HGF is secreted by mesenchymal cells and stimulates mitogenesis, cell motility, and matrix invasion
- It is involved in cellular growth and morphogenesis in a wide variety of tissue types
- In humans, HGF is present on chromosome 7.
