- Annexin II often exists as a heterotetramer complexed with an 11kDa light chain
- This p11 subunit is related to the S100 family of calcium-binding proteins but mutations have rendered it unable to bind calcium
- The p11 protein binds to the amino terminus of the annexin II monomer, but not to other annexins
- It may regulate the function of annexin II, as the tetrameric form seems to have a higher calcium and phospholipid-binding affinity than the monomeric annexin II
- In the cell, p11 has been localized to the cytoplasmic face of the plasma membrane where the annexin II tetramer is known to exist
