- TRPM6 is predominantly expressed in the kidney and colon, and encodes a protein containing an ion channel domain and a protein kinase domain
- TRPM6 is crucial for magnesium homeostasis, and plays an essential role in epithelial magnesium transport and in the active magnesium absorption in the gut and kidney
- Further, TRPM6 is an essential ion channel and serine/threonine-protein kinase, and is crucial for magnesium homeostasis
- TRPM6 has an important role in epithelial magnesium transport and in the active magnesium absorption in the gut and kidney
- Isoforms of the type M6-kinase lack the ion channel region
- Mutations in TRPM6 are associated with hypomagnesemia with secondary hypocalcemia
- Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been noted for this gene
- TRPC7 is thought to form a receptor-activated non-selective calcium permeant cation channel
- TRPC7 is probably is operated by a phosphatidylinositol second messenger system activated by receptor tyrosine kinases or G-protein coupled receptors
- TRPC7 is also activated by diacylglycerol (DAG)
- Further, TRPC7 may also be activated by intracellular calcium store depletion.
