- The Rhox-13 protein is a reproductive homeobox protein found on the X chromosome
- This transcription factor belongs to the homeobox gene family whose expression organizes programs of development
- Reproductive homeobox genes regulate development of reproductive tissues including the testis, ovary, and placenta
- Most of the Rhox genes are expressed in Sertoli cells, the nurse cells in direct contact with developing male germ cells
- This suggests that they regulate the expression of somatic-cell gene products critical for germ cell development
- Transcripts of this protein are found in the testis and ovary as early as 13.5 days post coitum
- Transcription ceases in the ovary three days post partum, but continues in the testis through adulthood.
