- DiOC 2 (3) penetrates the cytosol of eukaryotic cells and accumulates primarily in mitochondria with active membrane potentials, producing bright, red fluorescence
- DiOC 2 (3) staining intensity decreases with decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, accompanied by a shift from red to green fluorescence
