Description
- General description: Lactulose is a synthetic derivative of lactose. It is made up of one molecule of galactose and one molecule of fructose.[1]
- Application: Lactulose has been used in the preparation of milk.[2]
- Biochem/physiol Actions: Lactulose helps to decrease the concentration of blood ammonia in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy. It is also used to treat constipation as an osmotic laxative. This non-absorbable disaccharide is catabolized through the bacterial flora to short chain fatty acids.[3] The enzymes of the mammalian digestive tract do not have the ability to digest lactulose.[1]
