- General description: Methyl cellulose (MC) is a simple derivative of cellulose.[1]
- Application: Methyl cellulose has been used:as a supplement for culturing multicellular spheroids of SH-SY5Y cells[2]as a supplement for culturing tumor cell spheroids[3]to generate and study the rheological behavior of aqueous mullite-albumin-methylcellulose systems[4]
- Biochem/physiol Actions: Methyl cellulose (MC) acts as a laxative and is hydrophilic. It has therapeutic effects against constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and diverticulosis due to its bulk-forming and stool softening properties. MC has the potential to treat patients with ileostomies and colostomies. It may also be used as a stabilizer and emulsifier.[5] MC is a component of eye drops and contact lens solutions.[6]
