Description

• General description: Lathosterol is a metabolite of cholesterol present in human breast milk.[1] Lathosterol is catabolized by lathosterol 5-desaturase to 7-dehydrocholesterol, which is a precursor of cholesterol.[2] Lathosterol-d7 is a deuterated derivative of lathosterol.
• Application: Lathosterol-d7 has been used as an internal standard in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) for the breast milk sterol quantification[1] and in liquid chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry (LC–HRMS) analysis.[3]
• Biochem/physiol Actions: Lathosterol levels are direct indicators of cholesterol levels and aid in decoding metabolism defects. Elevated levels of lathosterol is implicated in cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX) and lathosterolosis.[4] The inactivation of enzyme lathosterol 5-desaturase (SC5D) leads to accumulation of lathosterol in lathosterolosis pathology.[2]
