- General description: Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is a strong bilayer-forming lipid. It the most common phospholipid in mammalian membranes.[1] It is also an important component of the mucosal layer of the colon.[2]
- Application: 14:0 PC (DMPC) has been used in liposome preparation.[3] It is also suitable for use:in the preparation of lipid bicelles for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments[4]in labeled vesicle preparation for fluorescence polarization measurements[5]as internal standard (IS) for the quantitation of phosphatidylcholine (PC) by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS)[6]
- Biochem/physiol Actions: Phosphatidylcholine (PC) functions as a surfactant within the mucus to form a hydrophobic surface to inhibit bacterial penetrance.[2] It is used to treat fat embolism. Phosphatidylcholine lowers the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.[7]
