- General description: Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is one of the major glycerophospholipids of the eukaryotic membranes. PC is zwitterionic.[1] PC is synthesized via two pathways in higher eukaryotes like the triple methylation of phosphatidylethanolamine and the cytidine diphosphate (CDP)-choline pathway.[2]
- Application: 16:0-20:4 PC is suitable for use:in the preparation of auto-oxidised phospholipid for electrospray ionisation mass spectroscopic (ESI-MS) analysis[3]in liposome preparation for the treatment of organoid[4]as antigen in enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of autoantibodies to phospholipids[5]
- Biochem/physiol Actions: Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is essential for maintaining the structure and functions of the membrane. PC is the substrate for sphingomyelin synthesis. PC is the precursor for various second messenger like phosphatidic acid, lysophosphatidic acid, diacylglycerol.[1] PC is the dominant phospholipid present in cancer and neo-neoplastic tissues.[2] Level of 16:0-20:4 PC is less in multiple myeloma cells than in normal plasma cells.[6]
