- General description: Sphinganine (d20:0), also known as C20 dihydrosphingosine or icosasphinganine, is a C20 analog of sphinganine.[1] Sphinganine is a derivative of sphingosine.[2] It is formed in endoplasmic reticulum, by decarboxylating condensation of palmitoyl-CoA and serine.[3][4]
- Application: Sphinganine (d20:0) has been used as a standard in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for the quantitative analysis of plant sphingolipid long-chain bases.[5]
- Biochem/physiol Actions: Sphinganine (d20:0) is implicated in yeast heat stress adaptation.[6] Sphinganine inhibits protein kinase C in intact human neutrophils.[2] It might act as a biomarker for the diagnosis of sphingolipidoses.[3] It inhibits cholesterol transport in Niemann-Pick Type C (NPC) disease.[7]
