Description

  • Selectively enrich and isolate Salmonella typhi and other salmonellae from feces and sewage with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Tetrathionate Broth Base (Dehydrated)
  • Organisms which reduce tetrathionate, such a salmonellae, flourish in the medium while many fecal organisms are inhibited 1
  • Salmonella infection (salmonellosis) is a common bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract
  • Salmonella bacteria typically live in animal and human intestines and are shed through feces
  • Humans become infected most frequently through contaminated water or food
  • Tetrathionate Broth is recommended for the selective enrichment method of isolating Salmonella typhi and other salmonellae from feces, sewage, etc
  • The combination of thiosulphate and tetrathionate render selectivity to the medium, suppressing commensal coliform organisms
  • Organisms which possess the enzyme tetrathionate reductase grow in the medium
  • Salmonella and Proteus species possess the enzyme; Escherichia coli and shigellae do not
  • Members of Proteus group reduce tetrathionate and may consequently impair the value of this medium for the isolation of salmonellae; this disadvantage of the medium is largely overcome by the addition of 40μg of novobiocin to each milliliter of the incomplete medium before the addition of iodine 2,3
