Description

• Isolate and differentiate Enterobacteriaceae from potable water, dairy products and foods 1, 2 with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Endo Agar (Dehydrated) when used with basic fuchsin BR0050
• Originally designed for the isolation of typhoid bacillus 3 , Endo Agar is now mostly used for the differentiation of lactose fermenting and lactose non-fermenting intestinal organisms
• Production of both acid and aldehyde by lactose fermenting organisms, such as Escherichia coli , gives rise to the characteristic red coloration of the colony and the surrounding medium
• Use Endo Agar for detection of coliform organisms in water, wastewater and dairy products for the presence of indicator groups such as coliforms
• Besides safety, indicator groups provide a measure of food quality and spoilage potential
• One of the most common groups of bacteria employed as indicator organisms by the food industry are the coliforms, which can be regarded as a subgroup within the Enterobacteriaceae
• Easy-to-read: lactose fermenting coliforms (e.g
• Escherichia coli ) give rise to deep red colonies which color the surrounding medium and possesses a golden metallic sheen
• Non-lactose fermenters form colorless translucent colonies, against the pink to colorless medium
• Can be used for confirmation of presumptive test coliforms
